Devotional:
As we reflect on the message of our Good Shepherd walking us through the valley, when looking at scripture we can see several accounts of both men and women in the word who have encountered their own valleys. If we think of the conditions that were mentioned in the message, we can look to these accounts for encouragement knowing we are not alone. For those who followed Jesus, they sacrificed their lives for the sake of the Gospel. They were tortured, mocked and imprisoned yet they persevered knowing what they were doing was God's will for their lives. Prison cells are cold, dark, isolating and there's a sense of not knowing what's to come. Those who have imprisoned you have power over your life but for those who put their faith in God knew their lives were in the hands of their Father. If we look at the New Testament we have the prison Epistles written by Paul. These letters included Ephesians, Phillipians, Colossians and Philemon. These books of the Bible have been reaching the hearts of millions through the years and they still are. Even through suffering, the Lord had a purpose in each imprisonment that Paul had to endure. If we look at the book of Acts Chapter 26, we see the trial of Paul standing before King Agrippa and Governor Festus giving His defense while imprisoned in Caesarea. This wasn't just any King though. This was the man whose great-grandfather had tried to kill Jesus as a baby; his grandfather had John the Baptist beheaded; his father had martyred the first apostle James. So imagine Paul standing before this King knowing this history. Instead of being fearful though He spoke of His ministry and who He was even before coming to Christ. While standing there He could have denied all that God had done in His life but instead we see Him in verse 29 saying , “Whether short or long, I wish to God that not only you but also all who hear me this day might become such as I am—except for these chains.”
We all have experienced the chains of this world in which they can be so heavy and difficult to carry but Paul endured even to the point of standing in front of king Agrippa knowing His life was in His hands. Paul was more concerned about proclaiming Jesus in his life than his personal freedom.
May we look at this account that Paul experienced and see the rest and peace He had in knowing His Good Shepherd. Whatever was to come, He knew the Lord would lead Him wherever He went.
When we look to our Father, our Good Shepherd, we can rest in knowing that He will guide us through the roughest terrain. We can trust that just like Paul, He will use His spirit in whatever way He wants to in order for His will to be done.
For to me, to live is Christ, to die is gain. Phillipians 1:21
