The Sure Foundation. Rooted #3: The Bible

Sunday, May 12, 2019
This is the third message in a 7-sermon series called “Rooted” (foundations of the Christian Faith.)
What do we believe about the Bible?
1.The Bible is INSPIRED by God as a whole and word by word.

(2 Timothy 3:16; 1 Corinthians 2:13; 2 Peter 1:21)

2.The Bible is INERRANT in its original writing.

(Hebrews 6:18; Numbers 23:19; Proverbs 30:5)

3.The Bible is COMPLETE and SUFFICIENT.

(Deuteronomy 12:32; Revelation 22:18-19)

4.The Bible is LIVING and ACTIVE.

(Hebrews 4:12; Ephesians 6:17; Isaiah 55:11; 2 Timothy 3:16)

5.This is how we GROW spiritually.

(Ephesians 6:17, 5:19-20; Matthew 12:34b; Philippians 4:8-9; 1 Corinthians 10:13; Psalm 119:9-11)

6.This is God’s primary COMMUNICATION method with us.

(Psalm 119:105; John 17:17b)

7.We will face problems of DISCIPLINE, DISTRACTION, and DRYNESS.

Reading the Bible Devotionally
1. Get a Bible and something to write on
2. Pray! You are communing with God!
3. Read–a chapter, a passage or until something strikes you
4. Think, apply, write, meditate on it
5. Pray about what you read, and whatever else is on your heart

Read in such a way as to allow God to speak to you!
1. Picture it—close your eyes and imagine the scene
2. Pronounce it—emphasize a different word each time through 3. Paraphrase it—put it in your own words
4. Personalize it—put your name into the verse
5. Pray it

Ask yourself….is there a:
Sin to confess?
Promise to claim?
Attitude to change? Command to obey? Example to follow? Prayer to pray?
Error to avoid?
Truth to believe?
Something to be thankful for?

Taking it further to help you THRIVE

1.Looking back at your notes from this week’s teaching, was there anything that particularly caught your attention, challenged, or confused you?

2.The Bible is the Word of God. Where else do we in Scripture do we read about the Word or words of God? Discuss the characteristics of His Word and how they might also apply to the Bible.

3.Often we struggle to make a quiet time part of a daily habit. Share with the group one thing (distraction, schedule, etc) that you struggle with. As a group, discuss some strategies to overcome this.

4.How is Bible study different from devotional reading? How are they connected? Why are both important?

5.Read Hebrews 4:12. Share a time where you found these characteristics of the Scriptures to be true in your life.
