Rooted #2: Sin and Salvation

Sunday, May 5, 2019
This is the second message in a 7-sermon series called “Rooted” (foundations of the Christian Faith.)
An angel’s choice: the advent of sin in the heavenlies

(Job 38:4-7; Hebrews 1:14; Isaiah 14:12-15; Luke 10:18; 2 Corinthians 11:14; Ezekiel 28:1-19; Revelation 12:4; Matthew 13:19; 2 Corinthians 4:4; Ephesians 2:2; John 8:44)

1.PRIDE and elevation of SELF to the place of God is where sin began. (And this is how it exists today!)
Man’s choice: the advent of sin on earth

(Genesis 2:16,17; 3:1-7; 1 John 2:16; James 1:14; Romans 3:23, 5:12, 6:23; Psalm 51:5)

2.Satan tempted Eve to question God’s word, TWIST His word, DOUBT His character, and make up her own MIND.
3. They SAW – they WANTED – they TOOK.
Man tried to mend it…

(Genesis 3:7)

4.They worked industriously to ‘COVER themselves’ – but failed.
God offered a temporary mend.

(Genesis 3:21; Hebrews 9:22)

5.God was gracious and made a BETTER covering for their shame.
God offered another temporary mend.

(Leviticus 1-5; Numbers 15:4-5; Hebrews 10:4)

6.God instituted a system of sacrifices that was a sneak peek of a coming, greater REALITY.
God’s PERMANENT mend – The sacrifice for a NEW LIFE!

(Hebrews 10:1-10, 19-22; Colossians 2:17; Romans 6:23b, 8:1; 10:9-10; Isaiah 30:15, 59:2; Proverbs 28:13; 1 John 1:8-10; 2 Corinthians 5:21, 7:9-10; Ephesians 1:7, 2:8-10; Acts 13:38-39; 1 Peter 1:4, 2:5,9; 3:18; Philippians 3:20; John 1:12-13; Galatians 4:5)

7.God offered the Jesus as the perfect sacrifice and ONLY way back into a right relationship with God the Father – a GIFT that must be received.

Taking it further to help you THRIVE

1.Looking back at your notes from this week’s teaching, was there anything that particularly caught your attention, challenged, or confused you?

2.Eve bought the lie that by engaging in what was forbidden she could (Genesis 3:4) “become like God.” Becoming like God might not be in the front of our mind when we are tempted to sin…but in what ways is this the heart (enticement) behind our temptations?

3.Look at point #2 on this note sheet. In what ways are we guilty of doing this same thing Eve did?? (Perhaps share a specific example.)

4.Why were animal sacrifices insufficient? Why was the sacrifice of Christ necessary? (See Hebrews 10)

5.In addition to being forgiven our sins, what are some very real benefits of salvation? (For some help, read the following verses: Philippians 3:20, 1 Peter 1:4, 2:5,9; John 1:12-13; Galatians 4:5)
