God So Loved That He Gave

John 3:11-21
Sunday, October 20, 2019
1. Jesus talked about and offered new birth from a position of total AUTHORITY.

(Matthew 28:18; Ephesians 1:21; 1 Peter 3:22; John 3:35; Philippians 2:10)

2. My rebirth into new life cannot happen without Jesus’ DEATH and RESURRECTION.

(Numbers 21:4-9; Galatians 3:13; 2 Corinthians 5:21; John 12:30-33; Isaiah 53:3-5; Hebrews 9:28, 10:7-10; Romans 4:25, 8:21; 1 Peter 1:18,19)

3. Belief is not mental acknowledgement but ‘bodily’ DEPENDENCE.

(John 1:12-13, 14:6; Matthew 16:24-27; Psalm 9:10; Romans 12:1,2; Ephesians 4:22,23; Philippians 2:5)

4. Rebirth is not something earned or rewarded, owed or obligated – it is a GIFT.

(Romans 2:4, 5:6-8, 6:23, 8:32; Luke 22:19; 1 John 5:11-12; Romans 5:15-17; Ephesians 2:8-9; 2 Peter 1:3)

5. God was “WHOEVER” – minded when He gave His Son.

(Romans 3:10; Hebrews 2:9; 2 Corinthians 5:15; 2 Peter 3:9; 1 Timothy 2:4)

6. Those who reject Christ will suffer because of what they have done to THEMSELVES.

(2 Thessalonians 1:8-10; Acts 17:31; 2 Corinthians 5:10; Matthew 12:36, 25:31,32; Hebrews 10:31

7. People reject Jesus because they prefer the MOMENTARY pleasures of darkness that lead to death over the ETERNAL joy of the Light that leads to life everlasting.

(John 1:4, 5, 8:12, 9:5, 12:46; 1 Peter 4:4)

1. Looking back at your notes from this week’s teaching, was there anything that particularly caught your attention, challenged, or confused you?

2. Why do we give gifts? How can giving be an appropriate demonstration of love?

3. Have you ever had someone reject / turn down a gift that you gave? How did that make you feel?

4. (See John 3:17.) What do people outside the Christian faith often say is the reason Jesus came? What should we say to people who do not understand why Jesus came?

5. God loved a world that had spiraled out of control, and He actively demonstrated that love. How can we demonstrate the love of Christ to a world that is spiraling out of control? (Let’s not respond with ‘Christianese’ generalities, but let’s be specific about how we are to live in the King George community!)

6. Jesus said that  “men loved darkness rather than light” (John 3:19.) When we think of darkness, we think of hiding. Why is ‘hiding’ dangerous? Why do people (even believers) tend to not be open with others about their lives / struggles / fears, etc.? What can we do to help change this?
