Come what may, following Christ is not about going backwards.
1.Sometimes, God uses SETBACKS to move us and the gospel FORWARD.
(Acts 26:9-11; Galatians 1:13-14; Acts 1:8; John 14:12; Philippians 1:12; Acts 11:19-21; Luke 21:12-13)
2.PROSPERITY can do more to stunt growth than PERSECUTION.
(Mark 4:19; Matthew 16:26, 19:24)
3.Dabbling in magical arts VIOLATES God’s Word.
(Galatians 5:19-21; Leviticus 19:3; 20:6, 27; 1 Samuel15:23; Deuteronomy 18:10-12; 1 Chronicles 10:13; 2 Chronicles 33:6; Isaiah 8:19; Micah 5:10-12; Acts 19:17-20; 1 John 4:1; Revelation 21:8; Psalm 119:105)
4.Be careful to follow someone who is PROCLAIMING Jesus, not himself.
Taking it further to help you THRIVE…
1.Looking back at your notes from this week’s teaching, was there anything that particularly caught your attention, challenged, or confused you?
2.Describe a time when a setback actually served to move you forward in some way. What should we / can we do to be better at handling future setbacks and scatterings?
3.Our mission has been given to us by Jesus (Matthew 28:18-20). In what ways are we / have we been seeking to live in comfort more than seeking to live on mission? What specifically might we need to change?
4.On Sunday, John said that many [in churches] today are like those who were astonished by Simon the Sorcerer – “Wow me, and I will follow you.” Why is this dangerous? What can we all do as believers to resist this hollow philosophy?
