Don’t Miss It (part 1)

Don’t Miss It (part 1)

(Luke 1:26-38, 46-47; Matthew 1:18-25, 2:1-12)
(May NOTHING causeus to miss ANYTHING that Christmas represents.)

What we learn from MARY…

1. Mary could have doubted God’s FAVOR and neglected His BLESSING.

(Job 1:8; Ephesians 1:3,11; Psalm 8:4-6, 23:5-6, 84:11, 90:17; Proverbs 3:33-35; 2 Corinthians 9:8)

2. Mary could have overlooked God’s PRESENCE.

(Psalm 46:1-3; Proverbs 18:10; Nehemiah 8:10; Joshua 1:9; Isaiah 41:10; Matthew 28:20; Hebrews 13:5; Romans 8:38-39; John 14:16-17)

3. Mary could have trusted biology over a MIRACLE.

(Jeremiah 32:27)

4. In focusing on what is POSSIBLE, Mary could have missed the IMPOSSIBLE!

(Luke 18:27; Mark 9:23; Matthew 17:20, 19:26, 21:21)

What we learn from JOSEPH…

5. Joseph could have leaned upon his own THOUGHTS instead of upon God’s WORD.

(Deuteronomy 22:23-25; Proverbs 3:5-6; Jeremiah 17:9; Proverbs 28:26)

6. Fear and social PRESSURE could have squeezed Joseph into DISOBEDIENCE.

(Romans 8:31; Hebrews 13:6; John 14:27; 1 Peter 5:7; 2 Timothy 1:7; Deuteronomy 31:6; Psalm 56:3, 94:19; Proverbs 29:25; Psalm 118:8; Isaiah 26:3)

What we learn from The WISE MEN…

7. The wise men could have allowed other religious messages and PURSUITS drown out significant, foundational truth.

(Daniel 1:20, 2:2, 5:11; Acts 13:8; Proverbs 4:25-27; Romans 12:2; 1 John 2:15; Hebrews 12:2; Colossians 3:1-2)

8. The wise men could have been LAZY and unwilling to make the JOURNEY.

(Daniel 9:24-27; Micah 5:2; Numbers 24:17; Philippians 2:12; Colossians 3:17,23; Ecclesiastes 9:10; Proverbs 10:4; Psalm 119:105)

9. The wise men could have insisted on their own star, but they knew Jesus was THE star!

(John 3:30; Psalm 145:3; 1 Chronicles 29:11; Romans 11:36; 1 Samuel 2:2; Revelation 5:13)

Taking it further to help you THRIVE

1. Looking back at your notes from this week’s teaching, was there anything that particularly caught your attention, challenged, or confused you?

2. What are some of the greatest distractions that might prevent you from embracing the enormity of CHRISTmas? What can be done to counter these?

3. One of the greatest lessons we learn from the Christmas story is that, with God, ALL things are possible. In what ways might you be struggling to believe this right now?

4. Had Joseph resorted to his own thought and plan (and chosen to disregard God’s message to him), imagine the disaster! Recall a time you went with your heart instead of God’s Word / direction. What was the outcome? What would you do differently next time?

5. The wise men showed their wisdom most greatly in their persistence and insistence on getting to Jesus. What thoughts or actions might you be ‘pursuing’ that are preventing you from ‘getting to Jesus’?
