Let’s learn from these mistakes of Ananias (and Sapphira)…
1.He thought more of HIMSELF than OTHERS.
(Joshua 7:21; 1 Timothy 6:9-10; James 1:14-15; Jeremiah 17:9)
2.He wanted recognition from MAN.
(Matthew 6:1; Galatians 1:10; 1 Thessalonians 2:4; John 12:43)
3.He portrayed an IMAGE that didn’t match his HEART.
(1 John 2:6; Psalm 51:16; Matthew 23:27-28; James 5:16; Hebrews 10:23-25; John 3:20; Psalm 139:23-24)
4.He LIED to GOD.
(Revelation 2:23; 1 Samuel 16:7; 2 Samuel 11; Psalm 32:3-4; Psalm 51:3-4)
5.He LED his wife down a wrong road.
The consequences of these bad choices?
1.DEATH was a consequence.
(James 1:15; 1 John 5:16-17)
2.FEAR was a consequence.
3.GRIEF was a consequence.
In all of this, there was a necessary lesson:
1.God hates SIN, and so should we.
(Luke 8:17; Numbers 32:23; Luke 2:35)
2.God desires HOLINESS. We can’t take this lightly.
(Proverbs 3:11-12; Hebrews 12:5-6; 2 Corinthians 6:2; 2 Corinthians 7:1; Hebrews 12:14; 1 Peter 1:15-16; Psalm 119:9; Romans 12:1)
Taking it further to help you THRIVE…
1.What was Ananias’ sin? Sapphira’s? How might we be tempted to do the same / a similar thing?
2.What are some ways your appearance in public differs from who you really are?
3.In what ways were Ananias’ and Sapphira’s actions (and perhaps motives) not consistent with Christian behavior? How do Christians act like Ananias and Sapphira today?
4.1 Samuel 16:7 says that “The Lord sees not as man sees: man looks on the outward appearance, but the Lord looks on the heart.” How does this verse relate to our hypocritical and non-authentic actions before God?
5.What is the biggest sobering truth you are taking away from this account in Scripture?
